In a hurry? Mobal Pocket WiFi in five points:

  • You buy the device: ¥6,980 once. It isn’t a rental, so there is nothing to send back.
  • Monthly plans: 100GB for ¥4,980, 200GB for ¥5,980 or 300GB for ¥6,980. After the allowance, speed drops to a maximum of 384 kbps until the 1st of the next month.
  • No battery: the Pocket WiFi Stick runs on USB-C power, so it has to stay plugged into a laptop, a power bank or a wall outlet.
  • Cancelling: any time, but send the request by the 20th for service to end that month. After the 20th, it ends at the end of the next month.
  • Discount: keep a Mobal Voice+Data SIM or eSIM active and the monthly fee is 10% lower.

Mobal sells a Japan pocket WiFi that you buy rather than rent: a small USB-C stick that shares one internet connection with up to 8 devices. This guide covers what it costs each month, what happens when you use up your data, how you get it and switch it on, and the cancellation rule that decides how many months you pay for. We checked Mobal’s product page, terms and help articles on October 30, 2026. Prices are in yen with tax included.

Mobal Pocket WiFi prices

You pay for the device when you order, and choose a monthly plan when you activate it.

Item Price With an active Mobal Voice+Data SIM or eSIM
Pocket WiFi Stick (one-time)¥6,980¥6,980
100GB a month¥4,980¥4,482
200GB a month¥5,980¥5,382
300GB a month¥6,980¥6,282

The 10% discount is applied automatically each month for as long as your Mobal Voice+Data SIM or eSIM stays active. Mobal’s cheapest Voice+Data plan was ¥1,650 a month for 1GB when we checked in October 2026, so a phone number on that plan plus 100GB of WiFi comes to ¥6,132 a month. Payment is by credit or debit card or PayPal; Mobal doesn’t take cash. Payments are processed in yen, and prices shown in other currencies are only a guide.

How the Pocket WiFi Stick works

The Pocket WiFi Stick is 82 × 30 × 12 mm and weighs 32 g. Mobal says it connects to the SoftBank, Docomo, au and Rakuten networks, with speeds of up to 150 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up on 4G LTE. It needs no SIM card. Up to 8 devices can connect at once, and the network name and password are printed on the back.

The one thing to know before you buy: it has no battery. Mobal’s help page says it must be connected to a power source the whole time you use it. You can plug it straight into a laptop’s USB-C port, or into a power bank or a wall outlet, and Mobal includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter. At home that is easy. If you want WiFi while you are out, you will need to carry a power bank; our guide to power banks for Japan covers what size to get.

The service only works in Japan.

What happens when you use up your data

Your full-speed allowance resets on the 1st of each month. If you go over it, the connection doesn’t stop, but speed drops to a maximum of 384 kbps until the 1st of the next month. Mobal says that is too slow for streaming music or video, but fine for web browsing, email and messaging. If you work from home or stream in the evenings, pick a plan with room to spare; you can change plans, but the change takes effect on the 1st (see below).

How to get it: airport pickup or delivery

  • Airport pickup (free): choose “Pick-Up (Free)” at checkout and pick a date and place. For WiFi, Mobal lists two counters: the JAL ABC Arrival Counter on the 2nd floor of Haneda Airport Terminal 3 (open 4am to 1am every day) and the JAL ABC Counter in the North Wing of Narita Airport Terminal 1 (open daily from 6:30am until one hour after the last flight arrives at the North Wing). Mobal doesn’t list a WiFi counter at Narita Terminals 2 and 3.
  • What to bring: your order confirmation number and your physical passport. Photocopies, scans and digital versions aren’t accepted, and the passport must not be expired. You must be over 18.
  • Delivery in Japan (free): Mobal says the device arrives within 2 to 5 business days of your order.

Staff at the pickup counter can’t provide product support.

Activating it

  1. Log in to your Mobal account (MyAccount) and submit an activation request for the WiFi device.
  2. Enter the device’s IMEI number, printed on the label on the back.
  3. Choose the 100GB, 200GB or 300GB plan and an activation date. Immediate activation can take up to 24 hours. If you pick a future date, Mobal says it usually starts the process 1 to 2 days before that date.
  4. Pay the first month. If your date falls partway through a month, the first fee is pro-rated to the end of that month.

You must activate within 30 days of buying, or by the expiry date shown in MyAccount; after that, you have to place a new order.

Billing and cancelling: the 20th-of-the-month rule

After the first pro-rated month, the full plan fee is charged on the 1st of every month, in advance, until you cancel. Unused days aren’t refunded. To cancel, use “Cancel Service” in MyAccount. There is no minimum term and no device to return, but the date you send the request matters:

  • By the 20th: service ends at the end of that month.
  • After the 20th: service ends at the end of the following month, and you pay that month in full.

For example, if you send the request on November 15, your service ends on November 30. If you send it on November 22, it runs until December 31, and the December fee is charged on December 1. Plan changes work the same way: a change requested by the 20th applies from the 1st of the next month, and there are no partial-month refunds.

If you leave Japan, you can keep the device and reactivate it when you come back. Mobal notes that it may not be able to reactivate a WiFi device that has been cancelled for 12 months.

Money-back guarantee

If you aren’t satisfied, email returns@mobal.com within 8 days of activation and say why, and Mobal sends return instructions if needed. The guarantee lasts no more than 90 days from purchase, and it doesn’t cover shipping or service charges such as the monthly fee. Mobal says refunds may take 7 to 10 business days to appear.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

  • Good fit: you live in Japan for months, want home internet without a fixed-line installation, and are happy to keep the stick plugged in. Mobal Voice+Data SIM and eSIM users get the 10% discount.
  • Short trips: you pay ¥6,980 for the device before any monthly fee, and a trip that runs past the 1st of the month means another month charged in full. If you’re only visiting for a week or two, compare it with a travel eSIM in our eSIM vs pocket WiFi guide.
  • Heavy users: 300GB is the largest plan. If you want unlimited home internet, Sakura Mobile’s Home WiFi costs ¥7,678 a month with no data cap, though its speed depends on mobile signal where you live. Our Sakura Mobile home internet guide covers it.
  • You need a phone number too: Mobal’s Voice+Data SIM and eSIM are covered in our Mobal SIM and eSIM guide, and you can sign up for the SIM or the eSIM through our links.
